About our Portsmouth concrete contractor company

Who we are, how we work and what happens after you call us about your driveway, patio or slab.

How I got into concrete work

I grew up on a family farm where anything that broke got fixed right there, and the first concrete I poured was patching barn floors and stall pads. After that I spent years on other crews learning foundations and flatwork, the driveways, patios, walks and floors that lie flat on the ground. I started Portsmouth Concrete Works in 2017.

Most slab trouble I've torn out started underneath. Either the dirt settled or the water ran the wrong way, so what I care about most is what's under the concrete and where the water goes. That's also why we like the awkward jobs around Portsmouth, like sloped yards, tight side lots and old slabs that need opening up. I'd rather spend another hour figuring out a tricky spot than leave you a problem to find later. You can see the rest of what we build on our home page.

What working with our crew is like

Here's what you'll notice when you hire us, from the first look at your yard to the finished pour. Most of it comes down to doing the hidden work right and telling you why.

  • You talk to the person on your job

I come out, look at the job and write the estimate myself, and I'm on site when the concrete goes in. Our own crew does the work, so nothing you told me gets lost between the estimate and the pour.

  • Estimates you can compare line by line

Each estimate spells out the base, the mix and how we'll protect the fresh concrete while it cures, which is the slow hardening that decides how strong it gets. If the budget gets tight, I'll tell you to trim the finish before the subgrade, the packed ground the slab sits on, because a nice surface won't save a slab that settles.

  • A real plan for awkward sites

We like the jobs other crews pass on, like a sloped yard, a tight side lot or a cut through an old basement floor. I'll ask plenty of questions about where your water runs and what's under the old slab, and I'll tell you straight when something still needs checking.

What to expect from first call to pour

Here's how a job goes with us, from your first call to the finished slab. At each stage you'll know who's coming, what we're checking and what you're waiting on.

  1. Step 01

    Call or send the form

Call (603) 956-1034 or use the form on our contact page. Tell us your address and what you're dealing with, like a cracked driveway, a sinking walk or a new patio. We reply within one business day to set a time.

  2. Step 02

    I come look at it

Estimates are free at your property, with no pressure to book. I'll check the slope, the old concrete and where water pools, and the estimate shows what drives your price, mostly the size, the base work, access and the finish.

  3. Step 03

    We sort out permits early

Before we set a pour date, we check what the city's Inspection Office needs and help with any sketches or site plans. In the Historic District, exterior changes need a separate Commission review that adds at least a month, so we plan for that.

  4. Step 04

    Our crew pours and finishes

Our own crew digs out, packs the base and pours, and I'm there for the pour. We're fully licensed and insured, and the finished job is backed by our satisfaction guarantee.
